The art of ironwork and the insignia of power in Adioukrou country

Neighbors of the Ebrié and the Alladian in the lagoon region near Abidjan, the Adioukrou possess a complex social structure where the passage of age classes and accession to titles of notability ( Low festivals) are highly codified.
This 15 cm knife fits perfectly into this context of prestige. Far from being a functional weapon of combat, this miniature hand-forged piece constituted an insignia of power, a ritual accessory handled by initiates or spiritual leaders during major ceremonies of passage or judgment.

The blacksmith's work is characterized by an economy of lines of great modernity:
a wide ring allowing fingers to pass through or the object to be suspended, connected by a short neck to a leaf-shaped blade.
The texture of the iron is exceptional; the deep, ancient rust covering the steel does not alter the solidity of the piece, but acts as a natural geological certificate, validating its long ritual past and venerable antiquity.

A rare display piece for the discerning collector.

In early African art, wooden sculpture often overshadows the genius of the masters of fire.
However, lagoon forging objects like this Adioukrou knife possess a raw graphic strength that is highly sought after.
Due to its size of 15 cm, this object has an aesthetic density that is perfect for display in a showcase or on a collectible board.
It testifies to the historical importance of metallurgy in pre-colonial Ivory Coast.
